Beaded Jewelry from Guatemala – It is amazing how fast the women can produce these pieces while keeping the quality superb and consistent.
The art of beading is passed on by grandmothers and mothers to the girls at a young age. The older siblings will often perfect the art and help with the family business in their free time.
The jewelry is known for their beautifully colored and unique patterns.
The beaded pieces are produced throughout the areas of Sololá and Quiche. The women work in their homes while taking care of their family. They will also work in a common area like the one pictured. The women often work as a team, producing their traditional art while sharing in the care of their children.
Each bead is picked up individually and then applied directly to the piece or to a small loom about 8 inches long. Actual length will depend on the piece they are making. Watching them in action is truly amazing as they talk, laugh and almost seem like they don’t need to pay attention, but in the end another beautiful creation is made.
